About Us

Friends of Wingate is a volunteer organization formed in 2011 to enlighten the youth on ways to help the environment while keeping the park and neighborhood clean.

In addition to identifying, expanding, and making physical improvements to the park in order to meet the needs of community groups like the elderly, toddlers, and the handicapped, the organization addresses critical issues such as guns and gang violence, housing, parenting, mentoring, jobs, immigration and incarceration.

Friends of Wingate Park target youth and families of Crown Heights, East Flatbush, East New York, Bedford Stuyvesant and Canarsie to unite ONE BROOKLYN. The organization builds community activism by bringing neighbors together to drive out negative influences and create positive, free, fun healthy programs for the community at large to build a stronger Brooklyn.

Friends of Wingate Park is working with Community Board 9, Schools, the Borough President's Office, District Attorney's Office and the 71st Precinct Community Council Affairs Unit to Strengthen and uplift the community. It is seeking to engage the support of Unions and local businesses to offer internship and apprenticeship opportunities to its volunteers.

Our mission statement:
The mission of Friends of Wingate Park is to contribute to park stewardship and build a stronger community through neighbors working together to beautify and upkeep Wingate Park as a valuable resource.

Our goal:
The goal is to serve the educational, social and cultural needs of the community; increase employment opportunity; and ensure the empowerment of our youth. And furthermore, to operate sports and gardening programs in the park, giving youth an outlet to learn how to become disciplined leaders, and develop sportsmanship and teamwork skills.
